Medical Board Rules

2. QUALIFICATIONS FOR LICENSURE

Except as otherwise provided in this chapter, an individual must be granted a full license by the Board before the individual may practice as a physician assistant.

A. PRELIMINARY LICENSE

The Board may grant a preliminary license as a physician assistant to an applicant who:

1. submits an application on forms approved by the Board;

2. pays the appropriate fee as determined by the Board;

3. has successfully completed an educational program for physician assistants or surgeon assistants accredited by the American Medical Association's Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation, or the Commission for Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, or its successor and/or has passed the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants or its successor; and

4. has no license, certification, or regulation as a physician assistant under current discipline, revocation, suspension or probation for cause resulting from the applicant's practice as a physician assistant, or with allegations which could form the basis of disciplinary action pending, unless the Board considers such condition and agrees to licensure.

B. FULL LICENSE

Except as otherwise provided in these rules, in order to practice as a physician assistant and obtain a full, license, an individual must complete the following:

1. obtain a preliminary license as provided in subsection A;

2. submit at least one of the following:

a. a statement from each supervising physician and physician licensed by the Board of Osteopathic licensure who is, permitted under rules promulgated by that Board to supervise physician assistants agreeing to provide supervision as defined in Section 1, at least one of whom must be a primary supervising physician;

b. if a physician assistant is to be employed by or a principal in an organized health care delivery system, a statement from the organized health care delivery system certifying employment as long as a physician in the organized health care delivery system facility has been approved as a primary supervising physician; or

c. if a physician assistant is to be employed by or practice in a group practice, a statement from a primary supervising physician in the group practice agreeing to provide supervision as defined in section 2.01, and which includes signatures and license numbers of all physicians in the group practice who agree to become secondary supervising physicians; and

3. comply with the requirements of Section 6. An individual may not practice until he or she has been granted a full license by the Board.
