Medical Board Rules

10. PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT STUDENTS

Physician assistant students shall perform medical services in Maine only for the
purpose of fulfilling the requirements of the physician assistant student's educational program.

A. NOTICE TO BOARD

Prior to a physician assistant student's performing medical services in Maine, the physician assistant student or the physician assistant student's supervising teaching physician shall notify the Board of the physician assistant student's intention to perform medical services in the State. The Board shall be notified in writing of the physician assistant student's identity, educational background, address and telephone, and of the address and telephone of the physician assistant student's educational program. Physician's assistant training programs may, instead of the above individual requirement submit a list of students and their clinical practice locations, including the dates of these student relations.

B. NOTICE RENEWAL

Physician assistant students shall be permitted to perform medical services in Maine for no longer than one year -without renewal of the notice and review of the circumstances by the Board.

C. PERMITTED PRACTICE BY PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT

Services performed by physician assistant students shall conform to the following guidelines:

1. The physician assistant student's teaching supervising physician and/or physician assistant shall have an active license;

2. A physician assistant student may perform only such medical services as may be performed by a physician assistant pursuant to the laws of the State and to the Board's rules and the medical services shall be performed pursuant to a plan of training developed in conjunction with the physician assistant student's teaching supervising physician and/or physician assistant;

3. Physician assistant students shall perform only delegated medical activities under supervision. of the teaching supervising physician and/or physician assistant;

4. Supervision of physician assistant students shall be consistent with this chapter and Chapter 3 of the Board's rules; and

5. Physician assistant students, teaching physician assistants and/or their supervisors may be disciplined by the Board consistent with the laws of the State and Chapters 2 and 3 of these rules.
