
13. CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
A. Beginning with the biennial registration in 1996, each physician assistant registered with this Board and who is actively practicing clinical medicine or surgery shall provide the Board with evidence of having completed one hundred (100) hours of continuing medical education during the preceding twenty four months.
(1) Although the total one hundred (100) hours may be in Category 1, at least forty (40) hours must be in Category 1.
(2) No more than sixty (60) credit hours may be in Category 2
B. Definitions of Continuing Medical Education Categories:
Category 1 activities are those planned CME programs sponsored or co-sponsored by an organization or institution and that have been accredited by one or more of the following agencies: American Academy of Physician Assistants; the American Medical Association Council on Medical Education; the National Liaison Committee on Continuing Medical Education, and/or the American Academy of Family Practice.
All Category 1 CME programs must be properly identified as such by the approved sponsoring or co-sponsoring organization. One credit hour may be claimed for each clock
hour of participation.Category 2 activities include CME programs with non-accredited sponsorship, medical teaching, papers, publications, books, presentations or exhibits, non-supervised individual CME activities, staff meetings and other meritorious learning experiences. Category 2 credit hour accrual will be as follows:
(1) CME programs with non-accredited sponsorship are those medical meetings and CME programs not within the definition of Category 1. One credit hour is earned for each hour of participation.(2) Medical teaching includes teaching of Physician Assistant Students, medical students, interns, residents, practicing physicians and other health professionals. One credit hour is earned for each hour of participation.
(3) Papers, publications, books, as described below are creditable. Credit may be claimed only for the first time the materials are presented and should be claimed as of the date materials were presented or published. Twenty (20) credit hours are earned for each presentation or publication:
a. A paper published in it recognized medical journal.
b. Each chapter of a book that is written by the physician assistant and published.
c. Presentations or exhibits offered to a professional audience, including allied health professionals.
d. Non-supervised Individual CME Activities: Value: One credit for each hour of participation.
e. Self-instructions such as the reading of medical publications, the use of audio tapes, videotapes, slides, programmed instructions or computer assisted instructions.
f. Self-assessment programs: Peer review activities; e.g., medical audit, utilization review, participation in PSRO or its equivalent.
g. Other meritorious learning experiences as individually approved by the Board.
(4) Each full academic year of post-graduate education training in a health related discipline may be claimed as fifty (50) hours of Category 1 credits.
