
SECTION 2: Practice parameters and risk management protocols for the specialty practice of Emergency Medicine:

INTRODUCTION: The Medical Specialty Advisory Committee on Emergency Medicine has developed the following Practice Parameters/Risk Management Protocols for use by participating emergency practitioners in the state of Maine. In so doing, the definition of Practice Parameters adopted by the American Medical Association has been accepted:
- 2. STANDARD: CERVICAL SPINE X-RAYS FOR ACUTE TRAUMA PATIENTS
- 3. STANDARD: TRANSFER OF PATIENT TO OTHER HOSPITALS.
- 4. STANDARD: ANKLE AND FOOT X-RAYS FOR EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT PATIENTS WITH ACUTE TRAUMATIC ANKLE INJURIES
- 5. STANDARD: X-RAYS FOR EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT PATIENTS
- 6. STANDARD LABORATORY TESTS FOR CERTAIN ACUTE ILLNESSES IN THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
A. Pursuant to 24 M.R.S.A. section 2973 (Supp. 1990), the Board of Licensure in Medicine jointly with the Board of Osteopathic Licensure finds the practice parameters and risk management protocols included in Appendix 1 of this Chapter to be consistent with appropriate standards of medical care and levels of quality in the practice of Emergency Medicine in Maine.
B. The Board of Licensure in Medicine and Board of Osteopathic Licensure have jointly adopted the practice parameters and risk management protocols for the practice of Emergency Medicine.
AUTHORITY TO ADOPT RULES: 32 M.R.S.A. section 3269 (1988 & Supp. 1990) and 32 M.R.S.A. section 2562 (1988); to adopt medical specialty practice parameters and risk management protocols: 24 M.R.S.A. §2973 (Supp. 1990).
